[Track & Field] Warriors Post Great Times at Aggie Open

Davis, Calif. – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Warriors returned to the track with an impressive effort at the 2014 Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis.  With two weeks of practice after kicking the season off at Stanislaus State, the Warriors posted many personal best times in a talented field.

Sophomore Christian Wichmann continued his impressive rise to the top for the Warriors with a 12th place finish in the 800 meters.  After running a 2:09.15 in the opening meet, Wichmann knocked five second off his time as he finished with a time of 2:03.94.  Freshman Justin Whelpley cut four plus seconds off his opening meet with a time of 2:14.44, which placed him in 17th place. 

In the 1500 meters, Wichmann took the top spot for the Warriors again with a time of 4:19.97, which placed him in 20th place.  Fellow sophomore Patrick Johnson had one of the best improvements as he knocked ten plus seconds off his opening weekend time with an impressive time of 4:24.09, which placed him in 22nd place.  In his first race of the track season, senior Wayne Smith finished on the heels of Johnson with a time of 4:24.40. Senior David Cummings placed 25th with a time of 4:26.40.

Sophomore Michael Basuini took 7th place in the 5000 meter with a time of 16:21.85.

Senior sprinter Micah Hays improved his time in both the 200 and 400 meter races.  He finished 15th in the 200 with a time of 23.82, while taking 16th place in the 400 with a time of 54.51.  Fresh off the basketball season, senior Sterling Shells made his first appearance of the season on the track.  Shells took 19th place in the 200 with a time of 24.42 and seventeenth place in the 400 with a time of 55.15.  Senior Julius Smith ran his first 100 meter race of the season as he finished in 23rd place with a time of 12.48.

In the field events, junior Nate Ellis shined in the triple jump as he finished in 4th place.  In his first meet of the year, Ellis finished with a mark of 13.63 meters.  Freshman Kyler Malarae finished 13th in the shot put with a mark of 11.28 meters.

On the women's side, senior Hannah Wiesner continued her strong senior season.  Wiesner led the Warriors in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.54, which placed her 15th.  Sophomore Allyson Richmond was right behind Wiesner with a strong time of 2:34.42.  Richmond improved her time by over seven seconds from the opening meet of the year. 

Wiesner led the way in the 1500 meter as she cut off eight seconds from the opening meet to finish 15th. She finished with a time of 5:01.03. Richmond took 23rd with a time of 5:27.99, while senior Dallas Butterfield finished her first meet one spot behind Richmond with a time of 5:37.96. 

Senior sprinter Emily Fernandez had a solid showing.  Fernandez finished 27th in the 100 and 28th in the 200 meter with times of 13.86 and 28.59, respectively.  Junior Lauren Young finished 28th in 100 meters with a time of 14.30.

Freshman Shannon Postle and Jennah Richmond traveled north to compete in the shot put at the Wildcat Invitational at Chico State.  Postle took 5th with a throw of 9.7 meters, while Richmond placed 9th with a throw of 9.44 meters. 

The Warriors will return to action next weekend at the Sacramento State Invitational.
