[Track & Field] Richmond and Smith Led Warriors at Chico State Twilight Invitational

Chico, Calif.  – On a beautiful weekend, the Warriors track and field team took part in the Chico State Twilight Invitational. 

Sophomore Michael Basuini and junior Jonathan Hernandez kicked of the weekend in the 5000 meter race on Friday night.   Basuini took 17th place with a time of 15:55.17, while Hernandez took 22nd with a time of 16:35.51. 

On Saturday, senior Wayne Smith had the best finish of the day.  Smith took 9th place in the 1500 meter while posting a time of 4:15.62.  Sophomore Patrick Johnson placed 13th with a time of 4:17.04, while freshman Craig Elliot finished right behind Johnson with a time of 4:18.61.  Freshman Justin Whelply had one of his strongest races of the year as he took 12th place in the 800 meter with a time of 2:08.88. 

In the sprint events, senior Micah Hayes took 19th place in the 400 meters as he finished with a time of 53.64.  Hayes had a time of 23.50 in the 200 meter, which placed him in 22nd place.  Senior Sterling Shells posted times of 54.52 and 23.54 in the 400 and 200 meters, respectively.

Sophomore Kenneth Parker took 11th in the triple jump.  Parker posted a distance of 12.90.  Junior Nate Ellis placed 15th in the triple jump as he recorded a jump of 12.55.  Ellis jumped 5.60 meters to finish 20th in the long jump.

Sophomore Allyson Richmond paced the Lady Warriors on Saturday.  Richmond took 7th place in the 1500 meters open division with a time of 5:23.25.  Senior Dallas Butterfield was three spots behind Richmond with a time of 5:30.70.  In the 1500 meter invitational divisional, senior Hannah Wiesner took 13th with a time of 4:58.57.

Senior Christina Malek had a time of 2:43.12 in the 800 meters, which placed her in 10th place.  Junior Sara Martinez was two spots behind Malek with a time of 2:44.75. 

Freshman Lauren Lee continues to make an impact in her first year in sprints. Lee took 15th in the 100 meters with a time of 12.94.  She also was the Warriors top finishers in the 200 meters as she recorded a time of 27.71, which placed her in 24th place.  Senior Emily Fernandez took 25th in the 100 meters with a time of 14.26. 

The Warriors will return to action next weekend at the Cal State East Bay/Chabot Invitational on Friday and Woody Wilson Invitational at UC Davis on Saturday.
