[Men's Track & Field] Senior Sprinter Sterling Shells Reflects on His Journey at WJU

Comments

Senior sprinter Sterling Shells will run in his final meet this weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at the University of California.  He has been a part of the track & field and basketball programs for five years.  Shells reflects on his journey as a student-athlete at WJU:

Why did you choose William Jessup University?

I chose Jessup because they were giving me the opportunity to further my education as well as play basketball. The timing couldn't have been any more perfect and that's how I knew that this is where I should go.

What have you learned from running for Head Coach Parker Daniells?

Parker has really showed me how far I can push my mind and my body, he taught me that you can handle way more than you think you can. This does not just apply to track but also in life.

What was your favorite memory from your Track and Field career at WJU?

My most memorable moments are definitely going to the drives to and from the meets. We always have a good time and the team gets along so well, we always have a great time. But it would have to the first week of track practice. That workout was one of the hardest ever and I've never thrown up so much before.

Who had the greatest influence on your life to get you where you are today and why?

My parents and grandma. My grandma has been my best friend and go to person since I started college. My parents have just been so supportive and reliable since day one, they always provide even when it seems like they won't be able to. So without them I definitely wouldn't be here today. I am truly blessed.

What are three traits that helped you get where you are today?

Hard work, sacrifice, perseverance

If you had one piece of advice for future Warrior student-athletes, what would it be?

I would say to always work hard no matter what and be hungry. Before you know it you will be in your last semester wondering where did the time go and you don't want to have any regrets.

What's been your greatest experience as a student-athlete at WJU?

My greatest experience would be just my whole entire career here at Jessup. I am in a position to represent my family, school and team and it's always fun to step on the court or the field and do what you love to do.

What will you miss most leaving WJU?

I will miss all the relationships that I created while I was here. Also, I will miss the road trips for both track and basketball.

How have you integrated your faith into running?

I run and practice to not only represent my self, family and school but God as well.

What are your goals after WJU?

My goals after WJU are to go out into the work world and get a job and first thing is to get these loans paid off.
