A marathon of meaning between the raindrops

Duane and Cheryl Hotaling have been in a marathon for more than a year.

Marine Cpl. Josh Hotaling zips through Sunday's rain and wind. He's undeterred by his war injuries. "I'm a big-time surfer and was a big-time runner, so this is a good way for me to keep in shape and be competitive," he said.

Jared Lowery of Ohio had plenty to reflect on Sunday after finishing the CIM near the state Capitol, especially if he had anticipated leaving Midwestern weather behind.

Runners splash past a few spectators on Fair Oaks Boulevard, at the 10-mile mark of the California International Marathon amid Sunday's storminess. The bad weather cut down the usual number of spectators, organizers said.
