LOS ANGELES The distance squad for the Cal State San Marcos track & field teams competed at the Oxy Distance Festival at Bill Henry Olympic Track on Friday evening.Two men's runners, juniors Steven Ing and Ryan Maize, punched their tickets to NAIA nationals in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase, respectively. On the women's side, Terra McGinns capped the night off by putting up a "B" standard in the 10,000m.Ing, who competed in the 5000m at nationals in 2014, ran 14:32.90 well under the "A" mark of 14:45.00.Maize finished the steeple in in 9:08.92 and took fourth place in his heat. The "A" standard in the men's steeple is 9:20.00. His teammate, freshman Andrew Tellames was in position to also qualify, but a fall kept him out of contention.McGinnis, who competed in the NAIA Indoor National Championships last weekend in Ohio, ran the very last race of the night and let the Cougars leave the meet on a high note. Her 37:52.82 missed the "A" by 22 seconds, but was comfortably better than the 38:13.00 "B" standard.Ing and Maize give the men's team five student-athletes who have put up NAIA standard times for outdoor nationals.
