[Men's Cross Country] Basuini Leads Warriors To Three-Peat; Coach Daniells Named Coach of the Year

Comments

Fresno, Calif. – The William Jessup University men's cross country team completed the three-peat on Monday morning at the California Pacific Conference Championship at Woodward Park.  The Warriors took the championship by 24 points, which qualifies the whole team for the 2013 NAIA National Championships in Lawrence, KS.

"The Men's team competed perfectly," stated Coach Daniells. "They raced a textbook race and ran very strategic as one unit. These men have stepped up as a whole against great competition. Embry-Riddle and Soka were mystery teams since we have not competed against them all year. We had to prepare for the unknown and the guys did a great job in being patient, running their own race and finishing the last 2 miles strong. Even though Michael and Wayne went 1 & 2 overall, our 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 were the guys that clinched the race."

Embry Riddle University took second place with 74 points, while UC Merced finished third with 77 points.

Sophomore Michael Basuini led the Warriors to the victory with a first place finish with a time of 26:21.  Senior Wayne Smith was right behind Basuini for second place with a time of 26:30.  Smith set the pace early for the pack, before Basuini was able to edge Smith at the end.  Fellow sophomore Christian Wichmann kept a steady pace, while finishing 12th with a time of 27:02.  Junior Jonathan Hernandez had a strong showing in his first Cal Pac Championship race as he placed 14th with a time of 27:36.  Senior David Cummings closed out a brilliant career with three title teams by finishing 21st with a time of 28:23. Sophomore Patrick Johnson placed 26th with a time of 28:45, while freshman Craig Elliot finished 30th with a time of 29:16.

With his first place finish, Basuini tops the Cal Pac All-Conference team as the conference runner of the year.  Smith earned All-Conference honors.  Coach Parker Daniells earned his third consecutive Coach of the Year honors.

"It is an honor to be nominated by my peers in receiving Coach of the Year," stated Coach Daniells. "It's been an honor working with them over the past 5 years and learning from some amazing coaches. I am so excited to share this award with my assistant coach Jacob Rydman and my wife Maria. We work very hard together as a team to make championships happen and it's very rewarding to be selected. This achievement could not have been done without our team as well. This award is a general reflection of their success and hard work and we thank them for that."

Now the Warriors prepare to travel to Lawrence, KS for the 2013 NAIA Championships on November 23rd.  This was the Warriors last California Pacific Conference Championship race as they transition into the Golden State Athletic Conference in 2014-15.
